The Collection
About the Collection
The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art collects works based on the following Collection Policy (established in 1987):
- Outstanding 20th-century art works from Japan and overseas, and works that contribute to an understanding of 20th-century art trends
- Works that represent the art of our times
- Works that represent the local art scene of Aichi Prefecture
- Material that contributes to an understanding the above works and artists
The museum’s collection is particularly well endowed with international and domestic fine art from the 20th century. It contains significant works that are helpful in tracing the history of various art trends, ranging from works by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Pierre Bonnard and Max Ernst who were active in the first half of the century, works by influential post-war artists such as American painter Morris Louis, and works by modern Japanese artists who assimilated Western art influences in their own unique ways to works by leading contemporary Japanese artists.
The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art’s collection is further broadened and enriched by 1477 works donated by Fujii Tatsukichi (1881–1964), who played an important role in modernizing Japanese crafts, and the Fujii Tatsukichi research group, and some 3307 works donated by Kimura Teizo (1913–2003), a famous Nagoya art collector, and his family. As well, in 2014, the original video works produced by the Aichi Arts Center on the theme of “the body” were transferred to the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, which continues to produce new works (AAC Films).
The works in these collections are displayed on a rotational basis at collection exhibitions, which are timed to fit the schedules of special exhibitions.
