Outline

This exhibition is an expanded version of the A Japanese Bestiary - Living with Animals in Edo-Tokyo (18th-19th Century), which was jointly held in Paris by the Edo-Tokyo museum and the Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris in 2022. During a lengthy period of peace in the Edo Period (1603-1868), people developed a close relationship with animals. Cows and horses carried goods through the streets of the city, dogs and cats were embraced as part of the family, and birds and insects making pleasant sounds were kept as pets. People's familiarity with living things is also evident from the use of various animal forms in designs for kimono, accessories, and toys.
Featuring a diverse range of artworks and crafts drawn from the resplendent collection of the Tokyo Metropolitan Edo-Tokyo Museum, this exhibition focuses on the relationships between people and animals in urban spaces of Edo-Tokyo.
