The term "costume jewelry" refers to jewelry made of various materials including not gemstones and precious metals but things like glass, beads, and resin. In the 1920s, Paris-based haute-couture designers such as Chanel, Dior, and Schiaparelli began to incorporate costume jewelry into their works, enabling them to create more freely without being restricled to a given material. In time, this led to the rise of specialized costume jewelry workshops in Europe, where highly skilled artisans helped designers realize their works.
