Our renovations are complete
The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art opened in 1992 as part of the Aichi Arts Center, an urban cultural complex. Since then, it has actively worked to develop and communicate new aspects of art and culture to the public, based on its core mission to serve as the primary art museum of the Chubu region.
The world has undergone dramatic changes in the quarter-century since the museum was founded—among them the development of global information networks, increasingly diverse human interests, and an increase in the number of international visitors and residents in Japan. In response to these shifts, Aichi Prefecture enacted a set of regulations designed to promote art and culture in 2018. Our renovation project was designed to reinforce the museum’s central role as a hub for the collection, exhibition, conservation, research, education, and promotion of works of art in an effort to foster increasing creativity and diversity in the world. These efforts are further guided by the following four priority concepts.
1. Intermediation: International meets local
We offer rich international exhibitions and an array of programs that bring together diverse organizations and individuals that support art and culture - including museums and artists both within Japan and abroad. In addition, we are always keeping an eye on local artistic and cultural movements in an effort to incorporate their unique features while serving as a communications hub that links the art and culture of the region to that of the country and the wider world.
2. Accessibility: Communication and sharing
The collection at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art spans an incredibly broad array of genres and eras. The massive amounts of information related to our works are widely disseminated through various media platforms in conjunction with highly unique perspectives. We want anybody to be able to access information on our collection at any time in the hopes of fostering a shared knowledge base and making our museum more open and accessible to all.
3. Diversity: Variety and uniqueness
We work to make the most of our unique position as an art museum within a massive complex that brings together multiple highly sophisticated facilities, among them an art library featuring an extensive collection of art-related documents and resources. As such, our activities span an increasingly wide range of media platforms and diverse forms of expression, and we aim to create spaces where people can encounter the variety of worldviews that these diverse forms of expression represent.
4. Creativeness: Freedom and innovation
Human beings are incredibly diverse, and their freedom to express themselves is what results in so many new forms of artistic expression. The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art offers opportunities for people to become familiar with these works of arts on a daily basis. We also aim to support art and culture in an effort to share the joy of creativity and artistic appreciation with everyone who is experiencing this modern age together.
